c. 1850-80, Thailand
Thi 1315Commentary:
In his search for enlightenment, Prince Siddhartha, the Buddha-to-be, sat down and meditated under what became known as the bodhi tree, or tree of enlightenment, at a place called Bodh Gaya. Mara, the Spirit of Evil, appeared on the mighty elephant Girimekhala to try and distract Siddhartha from his meditation. Despite tempting Siddhartha with his daughters and attacking him with an army of demons, Mara failed in his attempt.
